You all need to play the prologue of the game solo until you unlock coop (usually an hour or so of gameplay) and then can play together through all the missions and side quests with the exception of the finale which is only solo and cannot be played with others. EDIT: It seems like when every player sets the max framerate to 60 fps, this problem is fixed. If not, then when playing in co-op, you may come across both over-pumped zombies and weaklings, depending on the level of your teammates. This option is enabled by default.
